I want to know more about changing my smile. What do you suggest?

An appointment. You’ll need to first schedule an examination with Dr. Ken Copeland. He will assess your oral health and discuss options for improving your smile. Your smile and goals are unique. For straighter teeth, We offer Invisalign — the invisible way to straighten you teeth. After your consultation you’ll know if Invisalign is right for you.

For replacing missing teeth, you can, choose from crown and bridgework, partial of full dentures or dental implants. Many patients prefer dental implants because of their completely natural look and feel. We’ll help you decide which prosthetic option best suits your smile.

For whiter teeth, we have several options, to fit your budget and individual needs.

Will you provide comprehensive dental care for my entire family including young children under one roof?

Absolutely! We enjoy creating gorgeous, healthy smiles for patients of any age. If we find that your child or you, for that matter would benefit from seeing a specialist, we’ll refer you to a trusted colleague. As a general dentist, Dr. Ken Copeland’s preventive, cosmetic, and restorative services include treatments suitable for patients of all ages. Our entire team love working with children. Dr. Ken has 11 children and step children of his own, giving him the understanding that all kids are unique and require different approaches. My gums bleed after I brush. Is this something to be concerned about?

Bleeding is usually a sign of a problem. When gums bleed, the cause usually stems from brushing too hard or early stages of gum disease, called gingivitis. We can show you the proper toothbrush and pressure for safe, effective daily oral care. If your gums show signs of periodontal disease we may recommend a deep hygiene treatment to alleviate your symptoms. Gum disease is leading cause of tooth loss for American adults and has been linked to many overall health problems, including stroke, heart attack, and respiratory issues. Do I have to floss everyday? Is it really that important?

The use of dental floss is essential in preventing gum disease. Most oral health problems are related to dental plaque—the soft, sticky layer of bacteria on the surface of gums and teeth, particularly along the gum-line. When dental plaque grows it releases toxins that irritate the gums causing gingivits . If left untreated it may lead to more serious form of gum disease (periodontitis). The toothbrush can’t reach difficult areas in the mouth, like between teeth and along the gums. Using dental floss at least once a day provides effective removal of dental plaque and cleaning between the teeth.

I really don’t like visiting the dentist. Is there anything you can do to help me relax?

We’ve created a soothing, friendly environment where you can relax and feel at ease. Dr. Ken has an easy-going manner and soft touch. He uses a gentle injection technique for stress free numbing and offers nitrous oxide and/or Non-IV Oral Conscious Sedation.

Can I finance my dental treatment?

Yes! Ken Copeland Family Dentistry offers a Pre-Payment Program that works like layaway. Third-party financing is available as well. CareCredit often time offers low or no interest financing. Please visit their website for more details.

How does the doctor keep up to date on current techniques, technology, and materials in dentistry?

Dr. Ken and our team take more than the Virginia state’s requirement for continuing education each year. We also read trade journals, attend professional association meetings and do everything we can to stay current with the latest developments in general and cosmetic dentistry, as well as dental technology. Our practice offers E4D Dental technology, creating crowns in a day for your convenience. Plus coming soon is a Soft Tissue Laser and Diagnodent Caries Detector. This tool has the ability to detect a cavity, painlessly! We’re passionate about our careers, so we enjoy soaking up new information on our profession, then sharing it with you!

Do you accept my insurance plan?

We are only in network with Delta Dental. However, as a courtesy, we will submit your claim to all insurance companies (other than VA Premiere and Famis). We do not accept Medicare/Medicaid. Information for our patients with insurance

It is such a pleasure having you as a part of our dental family! We will never take for granted the fact that you have chosen us to care for your dental needs. We have made every effort to make your dental visits with us as comfortable as possible, and taking a tremendous amount of pride in providing the finest quality dental care available.

We are pleased that many of you have a dental insurance policy that will help supplement the cost of your needed dental treatment. We will do everything we can to help maximize your benefits. Unfortunately, with the insurance industry changing so dramatically, we have found that maximizing patient benefits under many plans can be very challenging! Our office administrators have spent many hours studying to become knowledgeable and familiar with the different insurance companies, and their subtleties. Unfortunately, the companies continue to change their policies regarding benefits, are often difficult to work with, and do everything they can to delay treatment and payments.

Our goal in this practice is to provide the very highest quality dental treatment available at an exceptional value. Unfortunately, insurance companies make money by paying only the very cheapest alternative, disregarding what is in the patient’s best interest! Very frequently, they will disregard what we diagnose, utilizing X-rays and a thorough clinical exam, just to decrease the benefits for use and increase the profit for them. Usually, this results in numerous phone calls and letters by our insurance administrator just to try to get them to re-evaluate our recommendation and pay for what is needed.

It has been the policy of some other dental offices to accept the insurance companies recommended treatment, which is diagnosed without ever seeing the patient! This compromises your care, and this is where we feel we must draw the line! We refuse to compromise, in any way the state-of-the-art, quality care for patients deserve and receive through our diagnosis and treatment.

As a courtesy, we will submit the insurance paperwork for you. We request that you pay your predetermined co-payment or patient portion at the time of service. When your insurance company pays us, any difference or remaining balance will be your responsibility.

Remember, we are here for you and take it very seriously when we are asked to compromise treatment just so the insurance company can make more money.

Meet the Team

After finishing his undergraduate degree at James Madison University, Dr. Copeland (better known as Dr. Ken to his patients) graduated from the Medical College of Virginia Dental School at VCU in 1987. He then went into private practice with his father where he received an excellent background in performing the highest quality dental procedures with the latest technology. In 1996, Dr. Ken completed a year long miniresidency for the American Academy of Implant Dentistry at the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Ken moved to the Shenandoah Valley in 1999 and has been practicing dentistry here since then.

He is a member of Doctors Offering Oral Conscious Sedation and is a certified Invisalign provider. Dr. Ken is active in the Donated Dental Services program and volunteers at the Harrisonburg/Rockingham County Free Clinic to provide dental treatment for those less fortunate. He and his wife Beth are very active in raising their children and in their church. He enjoys a wide variety of outdoor activities in his free time including hunting, fishing, four wheeling, horseback riding, and scuba diving. Dr. Ken works hard to establish a rapport with his patients to make them feel comfortable with their decisions regarding their dental health and treatment as well. Patient education is an important aspect of our practice. Dr. Ken believes he has a great team of staff members who all work hard to provide excellent dental treatment to his patients

Beth is our office manager and is Dr. Ken’s wife. She is responsible for making financial arrangements for patients and handling insurance issues. Beth graduated from West Virginia University with a Masters in Mathematics in 1997. She taught math at Turner Ashby High School for eight years before joining Dr. Ken’s staff. She also has experience working for a third-party ESOP administration company. When she is not at the office, she enjoys volunteering at her children’s schools, cooking, scrapbooking, playing with their 9 younger children, and completing Sudoko puzzles. Beth is CPR certified and enjoys attending seminars and workshops to learn more about the dental field and the latest procedures/technology. Beth, having been an Invisalign patient herself, is a major advocate of the benefits and ease of Invisalign. If you have questions regarding Invisalign, insurance coverage, or your account, Beth is always happy to help answer your questions. She will work hard to help you find a way to afford the care you need and deserve.

Lori is one of our Patient Care Coordinators. She has been a part of Dr. Ken’s team since March of 2000. She takes care of scheduling appointments, answering phones, going over treatment plans, and helping patients better understand their insurance benefits. Lori loves being part of this wonderful staff and working with such great patients. She is a “people person” and loves getting to know her patients and building a “friendship” relationship with them. When you call our office, it’s a good chance you will be talking to Lori. If you get called “sweetie” or “honey” then you are guaranteed to be talking to Lori. Outside of the office, Lori enjoys spending time with her family and friends and going camping. Her top priority in her life is raising her son, Matthew, who is her pride and joy. Ramona is the Hygiene Coordinator here at Ken Copeland Family Dentistry. She has been married for 30 years to her wonderful husband, Larry, and has two amazing children, Victoria and Larry. Ramona has lived in Harrisonburg since 1995 and absolutely loves it. She has worked in the dental field as a receptionist for 15 years and truly enjoys helping patients feel welcome and at ease in the dental atmosphere. She is also proud to be of service as a translator and help Spanish-speaking patients feel equally welcome and at ease about meeting their dental needs. Ramona loves being a part of the Ken Copeland Family Dentistry team. When she is not helping patients keep up with their dental hygiene, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, walking for fitness, reading and going to the movies.

Anna is our insurance and financial coordinator. She is available to help our patients better understand their insurance benefits, present them financial options to help them afford their treatment, and to help schedule treatment to meet their budget and dental needs. Born and raised in Rockingham County, Anna graduated from JMU with a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Sciences and joined our team after 5 years in the Health field. She is a newlywed with a “big baby boy”, Moose (her brindled Boxer). Her husband, Canaan, is a good sport allowing her to experiment with making up new recipes. She loves being outside camping, fishing, hiking, and enjoys water skiing in the summer. Anna is athletic and loves sports, especially playing softball and basketball. During football season, you will find her cheering for the Philadelphia Eagles. Anna’s family and friends are a source of enjoyment for her; she loves spending time with them and planning get-togethers. Anna is excited about working in the dental field and is committed to providing our patients with the information they need to plan for their dental treatment. Corrinne’s passion for dentistry began over 44 years ago. She has been a dental assistant for Dr. Ken Copeland since October of 2005. She has assisted in general practices (such as Dr. Ken’s), pedodontic practices, orthodontic practices, and oral surgery practices giving her a wide array of experience. Corrinne has been married for more than 42 years. She has a son and daughter and is the very proud grandmother of three grandsons. When she is not working, she enjoys cooking, photography, the outdoors, shooting sports, and spending time with her family. Corrinne is very skilled at explaining to patients how procedures are performed and letting them know what to expect during treatment. She is CPR and Radiology certified. Corrinne is an advocate of Invisalign as she is currently in treatment herself and is an example of the benefits of Invisalign at any age. Amy has been a dental assistant for over 14 years, working with Dr. Ken Copeland since January 2000. She has worked 2 years with an Oral Surgeon and 1 year with a Periodontist as well. Amy has a sweet personality and is very endearing to her patients. When you see Amy at the office, you will likely find her smiling. She enjoys taking continuing education classes to learn more about Invisalign, state of the art procedures and up to date materials. She is CPR and ACLS certified as well as being certified as a Surgical Assistant. Amy has been a part of the American Dental Assistants Association. Amy is married and is a proud mother of 4 children with whom she enjoys camping, fishing, and hiking in the summer months. She also enjoys baking, cooking, reading, NASCAR racing and football. If you need to have treatment completed by Dr. Ken in our office, you can be certain that Amy will make you feel comfortable and put a smile on your face before you leave the office.

Dawn is a Registered Dental Hygienist who joined our staff at Ken Copeland Family Dentistry in September 2007. Prior to that, she had worked with Dr. Ken while he was employed at Copeland Family Dentistry. She is a local Valley girl who graduated from Spotswood High School in 1989 and received an Associates Degree in Dental Hygiene from Lord Fairfax via VWCC in 2002. Dawn is CPR and Radiology Certified. Prior to becoming a hygienist, Dawn worked as a Dental Assistant for 9 years. She has been married for over 19 years to Shannon Lokey and has two teenagers (a son age 16 and a daughter age 13). Dawn is very active and loves being with her family and enjoys life to the fullest. She loves taking photos, hiking/walking (doing just about anything outside), working out, and cooking/baking. Angela and Dawn have the same philosophy about oral hygiene and work together to help all patients feel comfortable and to assist them in maintaining their oral hygiene.

Angela is a Registered Dental Hygienist. She joined the team in 2008. She graduated from Virginia Western Community College with a degree in 1996. In 2009, she received her local anesthesia and nitrous oxide certification from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has worked in both general and periodontal offices throughout Virginia. In addition to dentistry, she was actively involved in water rescue and a member of the Jefferson Area Council for National Disaster Relief. She is an advocate for continuing education and believes that there is nothing more valuable than knowledge. “Evolution is essential in every dental career. ” Angela resides in Fishersville along with her husband of 11 years and her “babies” (four rabbits and two parrots at last count). She is into yoga, crafts, cooking, wine, and hanging out with friends and family. She has studied spanish both in high school and college and, although doesn’t speak as well as she once did, enjoys using it in the office to help patients who otherwise might not understand.

Shawna is a Dental Assistant in the Hygiene Department. She joined our team in July 2007. Shawna has 4 years of dental experience in a Pediatric and General dental office. She is CPR and Radiology Safety Certified. All aspects of the dental field appeal to Shawna. She loves to work in dentistry whether she is assisting with fillings, educating patients about proper oral hygiene techniques, or polishing a patient’s teeth. Married to a law enforcement officer for over 11 years, she has a handsome son named Josiah. In her free time, she enjoys scrapbooking, shopping, watching football (FSU!), and gathering with her family. Her patience and caring personality help ease the anxiety of our young (and old) patients.

Your First Appointment

Every time you visit Ken Copeland Family Dentistry, we will welcome you with a smile! You’re our guest, as well as our patient, so expect to feel right at home. We’ll mail you a registration packet before your first visit. If you complete the forms and mail them back to us before your appointment, you’ll save some time. Your first exam should take about one hour. The dentist will meet with you, discuss your primary concerns, goals, and expectations, then conduct a thorough oral examination. We will take digital X-rays and intraoral photos so that you can view your mouth on a chairside monitor alongside the dentist. Before you go, we’ll make recommendations for treatment, explain your options, and schedule your next appointment.
